The Virtues Guide, later the Family Virtues Guide, was the creation of Linda Kavelin Popov, Dan Popov and John Kavelin. Between the three of them they had experience in paediatric psychology, psychotherapy, cartoon and art design, together with knowledge of the world's Sacred Texts. It has been extremely successful and very well-received, having been used in various therapeutic settings in addition to the family unit.
Fifty-two virtues were chosen for the book, with the intention of one virtue being emphasised each week. The book was first published in Canada in 1990, but publication has been undertaken by different institutions over the years, making the book difficult for Bahá'ís to find at times. It is now the "Family Virtues Guide", and in its new format continues to be well thought of by parents and education reformers in many countries.
The book constitutes part of the Virtues Project, and other materials, e.g. virtues cards, are available. The Virtues Guide can be considered to be a Bahá'í-inspired project, rather than Bahá'í in actual content. For example, the scriptural quotations given are taken from the different world religions, rather than simply from Bahá'í scripture. A strictly "Bahá'í" virtues book might, for example, give stories illustrating how 'Abdu'l-Bahá behaved in given situations, whereas the Virtues Guide relies on discussion of the best way forward which a person can choose.
Linda Kavelin Popov was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey on her television programme, about this project.
