Evanston is a city in the U.S. State of Illinois. It is also considered a suburb of Chicago.
History[edit]
‘Abdu’l-Bahá visited Evanston during His tour of the United States giving a speech to the cities Theosophical Society on May 4, 1912.[1] The Evanston Bahá’í community had established a Local Spiritual Assembly by 1934,[2] and in 1935 classes to train volunteers to serve as Temple guides at the House of Worship in Wilmette were being held in Evanston.[3]
In 1954 the Second Assembly of the World Council of Churches, a gathering of Protestant theologians, was held in Evanston and the Evanston Bahá’ís embarked on a publicity campaign which coincided with the event.[4]
In 1970 the second National Bahá’í Youth Conference of the United States was held in Evanston with Rúḥíyyih Khánum attending and speaking at the Conference.[5]
The Evanston Bahá’í community remains active to the present day holding devotional gatherings via Zoom,[6] and facilitating children's classes.[7]
