Elsa Matilda Vento (March 14, 1886 - August 31, 1955) was a Finnish-Canadian Bahá’í who assisted with the establishment of the Bahá’í community of Finland.
Biography[edit]
Vento was born Elsa Matilda Hellstrom in Tampere, Finland, in 1886. She moved to Canada in 1926 and settled in Toronto where she was introduced to the Bahá’í Faith and declared in 1938.[1] She began translating the Bahá’í Writings into Finnish after declaring having completed translations of some talks by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá by 1940 which were published in Finnish language newspapers in Canada.[2]
Vento pioneered within Canada to Prince Edward Island after declaring and was living there as of 1944 and she pioneered internationally to Finland in early spring, 1950, and settled in Helsinki.[1] As of 1951 she was facilitating an active group studying the Bahá’í writings and conducting firesides in her home.[3][4] Economic difficulties forced her to return to Toronto briefly however she was able to return to Finland in April, 1953.[1]
Vento passed in Kilo, Finland, on August 31, 1955.[1] Shoghi Effendi conveyed the following message after her passing:
Grieve loss precious pioneer Elsa Vento. Her historic services unforgettable. Praying (for) progress (of her) soul (in the) Kingdom.[5]
