El Cerrito is a city in the U.S. State of California located within the San Francisco bay area. A Bahá’í community was established in the city in the 1950s and consolidated in the 1970s.
History[edit]
There was at least one isolated Bahá’í living in El Cerrito as of 1950,[1] and by 1954 an organized Bahá’í group had been established in the city which was maintained into the 1960's.[2][3]
By 1970 there were eight Bahá’ís living in the city with the community being set the goal of establishing a Local Spiritual Assembly that year.[4] The Local Spiritual Assembly of El Cerrito was successfully established in the early 1970's and was maintained despite being in danger of lapsing in 1974.[5] In 1978 the Bahá’ís of El Cerrito collaborated with several neighbouring California communities to hold a Unity Picnic in Berkeley attended by eighty-five people.[6]
In 1981 the El Cerrito Bahá’ís raised funds to assist with construction work at the Louhelen Bahá’í Summer School,[7] and in 1982 the community was able to present a Bahá’í book to the cities Mayor at a celebration of United Nations Day.[8] In 1996 Hossain Bayat, an El Cerrito Bahá’í, was awarded the President's Volunteer and Community Service Award recognising five hundred hours of volunteer service at his sons elementary school.[9]
