Creative Commons
Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that promotes the sharing of and access to knowledge through the practice of open licensing. Its licensing system allows copyright holders to license their copyrighted works according to a variety of conditions, some freer than others.[1]
The six main Creative Commons licenses are the following:[2]
- Attribution (CC BY);
- Attribution–ShareAlike (CC BY-SA);
- Attribution–No Derivatives (CC BY-ND);
- Attribution–NonCommercial (CC BY-NC);
- Attribution–NonCommercial–ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA);
- Attribution–NonCommercial–No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND).
Apart from these, the CC Zero (CC0) Public Domain Dedication offers terms that are generally equivalent to releasing a work into the public domain, allowing essentially any use with no additional restrictions.[2]
Creative Commons licenses form an important part of the Internet, allowing the sharing of content (such as text, images, video and audio) with relative ease. This in turn fosters the development of online resources such as Wikipedia, Bahaipedia, and other wikis.
