The word Christ is a Greek word meaning "The Anointed One" or "The Chosen One", which amounts to the same thing. When the Prophet Samuel came to David's father's home, he inspected all the man's sons, and chose David. He was the one then anointed as special. In Hebrew there was a term "Messiah", meaning the same thing, and referring particularly to the One Chosen by God in the future, the One expected by the Jews.
When Jesus asked Simon (Peter) who Simon thought Jesus to be, Simon thought Him to be the Messiah. After some time, people referred to "Jesus the Messiah" (which would distinguish Him from other people called Jesus). The Greek version of this would be Jesus Christ. Christ therefore is a title, not a name or surname. The word "Christianity", therefore, developed from this title, much as the word "Buddhism" developed from the title Buddha, and not from Siddartha Gautama's personal name.
