Aurora is a city in the U.S. State of Illinois. It is the second largest city in the State after Chicago by population. The Bahá’í Faith has had a presence in Aurora since the 1930's with the community becoming more formally established in the 1980's.

History[edit]

As of 1938 there were two Bahá'ís living in Aurora who held weekly study classes attended by some residents of Aurora, and of the nearby village Warrenville.[1] In 1939 the construction of the Bahá'í House of Worship was reported in a local Aurora newspaper.[2]

In 1953 Aurora was designated a consolidation Goal City of the Ten Year Crusade for the United States.[3] In 1954 the Aurora Bahá'ís secured recognition of Bahá'í Holy Days from the Superintendent of Schools and Secretary of the Board of Education, allowing the children of Bahá'ís to not attend School for the observance of Bahá'í Holy Days.[4]

In 1957 the American National Teaching Committee listed Aurora as a community in which a Local Spiritual Assembly could be established, appealing for Bahá'ís to undertake teaching work in the city.[5] In 1964 the Aurora Bahá'ís held a public meeting to commemorate Human Rights Day.[6] In 1975 Aurora was again noted as a goal city for the establishment of a Local Spiritual Assembly,[7] and by 1978 the Aurora Assembly had been formed.[8]

The Assembly of Aurora was incorporated in 1983.[9] A Bahá’í Club was established at the Aurora University in 1987 which presented The Promise of World Peace message of the Universal House of Justice to school officials and delivered a talk on it to students that year.[10]
