Ashgabat is the capital city of the country of Turkmenistan, historically significant for being a major centre of activity and growth of the Bahá’í community during the Ministry of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. In the late 19th century, Bahá’ís purchased land in the city, which is located near the modern-day Iranian border in the historic region of Khurásán, and set aside some of it at Bahá’u’lláh's instruction for future projects, which would include the first Bahá’í House of Worship. Following an influx of pioneers, a strong community developed there.
