And His Name Shall Be One

And His Name Shall Be One was a 30 minute documentary in the Lamp Unto My Feet series produced by CBS News in 1966. It was shown on Sept 4. Articles noting it coming were posted in some newspapers since August,[1] and sometimes with coordination of followup meetings.[2] Description of the documentary was published in Bahá'í News in October 1966.[3] Rentals of the film were made available in January 1967 for $10 for a 3 day rental.[4]

Pamela Ilott made the initial progress of the work for the documentary with her producer Marvin Silbersher in 1965.[3] Hands of the Cause and members of the Universal House of Justice cooperated with the documentary. In April 1966 filming was done at the national convention and then Mildred Mottahedeh contributed an interview with CBS correspondent Dallas Townsend. Editing together of the film segments was done by Bernadette Suave and music added by Ethel Shaw. Consulting on the work were by Hands of the Cause Abu'l-Qásim Faizi and Amatu'l-Baha Ruhiyyih Khanum. Estimated audience was 20 million.[5] Overall the writing for the episode was done by Marvin Silbersher who worked for various CBS shows.[6] Among those interviewed (and not identified) are:

  • Dr. David Ruhe (from 15:18)
  • a white woman with red hair teacher from the Phoenix Indian School who attended the national convention (from 15:53) a few months after joining the religion
  • a black woman sitting next to a white man
  • a second white man (from 17:36)
  • Soo Fouts (from 18:03)[7]
  • Arthur L. Dahl (from 18:48)
  • a black man (from 19:16)

After the September 1966 airing there were successive reruns on CBS: July 1967,[8] April,[9] or June,[10] 1968, August 1971,[11] and April 1972.[12] In the National Bahá'í Review of June 1968 the National Assembly specifically encouraged group showings and opportunities for public awareness of the Faith.[13] The National Assembly also noted that two copies of the film loaned out in 1968 had been returned "totally damaged" and thus lost "several hundred dollars" and the use of these copies.[14] There were hopes for a followup by CBS in 1975.[15]

In 1973 Ilott won a Peabody award for her work in the series.[16]
