History[edit]
Possibly the earliest Bahá’í activity in Amherst was a visit made by Mountfort Mills in 1938 during which he delivered a talk at the Memorial Library titled The World Crisis and Solutions which received a detailed writeup in local Amherst and nearby Springfield newspapers.[1]
There appears to have been little noteworthy Bahá’í activity in Amherst from the 1940's into 1960's however in 1968 a Youth Conference for Bahá’ís from Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont was held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst,[2] and as of 1969 a Local Spiritual Assembly of Amherst had been formed.[3]
As of 1973 the Bahá’í children's periodical Child's Way was based in Amherst,[4] and as of 1975 a Bahá’í College Club was actively operating on the Amherst campus of the University of Massachusetts.[5]
