Alessandro Bausani (May 29, 1921 - March 15, 1988) was an Italian Bahá’í who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of Italy. In his career he was an academic of religion specializing in Islam and he notably translated the Koran into Italian and wrote some commentaries.

Biography[edit]

Bausani was born in Rome in 1921. He developed a talent for linguistics in his youth and was successful in his studies studying languages at university and also studied astronomy and mathematics. He began working in the university system and became an assistant to Professor Rossi who lectured on the Persian language in Rome.[1]

Bausani met Philip Marangella, a Bahá’í who had pioneered to Rome, in 1948 when he enrolled in Professor Rossi's Persian classes and through Marangella he was introduced to Ugo Giachery and began attending Bahá’í meetings. He declared on April 8, 1950. After becoming a Bahá’í Bausani began actively teaching the religion and delivering talks at summer schools and Bahá’í conferences,[2] and in 1953 he was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Italy and Switzerland when it was formed,[3] serving up to 1962.[4]

In addition to his services to the Faith Bausani also advanced his academic career and in 1956 he became the chair of Persian Studies at the Istituto Universitario Orientale di Napoli in Naples serving in the position until 1974. He often traveled due to his professional career often visiting Iran and Pakistan. He also notably visited Chicago in 1968 where he was honored by the Dean of Humanities at the University of Chicago.[5]

In 1962 an independent National Spiritual Assembly of Italy was formed and Bausani was elected to the body and served up until 1984. He began suffering a lengthy period of illness in later life but was able to continue to serve the Faith by writing and publishing books on the religion. He passed away in 1988.[6]

After his passing the Universal House of Justice conveyed the following message to the National Spiritual Assembly of Italy:

DEEPLY SADDENED PASSING PROFESSOR ALESSANDRO BAUSANI. HIS DEATH DEPRIVES BAHA'I WORLD COMMUNITY ONE OF ITS FEW OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARS AND ITALIAN FRIENDS ONE OF THEIR MOST DISTINGUISHED BELIEVERS. HIS LONG YEARS STEADFAST SERVICES AS MEMBER NATIONAL SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLY ENRICHED BY ACADEMIC RECOGNITION WHICH HE USED UNSTINTINGLY FOR SERVICE CAUSE LENDING IT AUTHORITY AND PRESTIGE WORLD OF LEARNING ASSURE HIM HIGH HONOR ANNALS FAITH ENDURING LOVING MEMORY ITALIAN COMMUNITY. EXTEND HEARTFELT SYMPATHY RELATIONS FRIENDS ASSURANCE PRAYERS SACRED THRESHOLD PROGRESS HIS SOUL ABHA KINGDOM.[7]
