Alert is a settlement on Ellesmere Island, in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. It is the northernmost community in North America, owing its existence to an Arctic weather station and military base.[1] Although it is not home to a Bahá’í community, individual Bahá’ís have visited and sent literature there.
In 1965, Bill Carr, a long-time pioneer to Thule, Greenland, travelled to Alert, "the northern-most point ever visited by a Bahá’í on the planet", to teach the Faith. While there, he donated Bahá’í literature to the local library.[2] Later in 1976, a copy of the Gleanings from the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh was donated through the efforts of Eugene Smith, a Bahá’í from Faro, Yukon who had been travelling through the Arctic with a musical group.[3]
