Dr. Agnes Ghaznavi-Fischer (1936 - February 4, 2025)[1] was a Bahá’í who has served on the National Spiritual Assembly of Switzerland and as a Continental Counselor for Europe.
Background
[edit]Ghaznavi was born to a Swiss father who worked as an industrialist and a Swiss-American mother. In her youth she volunteered in international youth work camps in Yugoslavia to assist in reconstructing the country following the Second World War. She later studied at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland where she completed a doctorate in psychiatry, discovered the Faith and became a Bahá’í, and met and married fellow Bahá’í student Bijan Ghaznavi.[1]
Professionally Ghaznavi established a career as a psychiatrist specializing in marriage counseling, while Bijan was a psychologist.[2] They also actively supported Bahá’í activities in Switzerland hosting new pioneers in their home and assisting them in settling into the country.[1]
Ghaznavi was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Switzerland and served on the body, often as Chair or Secretary,[1] up until 1980 when she was appointed as a Continental Counselor for Europe by the Universal House of Justice.[3] She was appointed for a second and final term as Counselor in 1985.[4]
