Agnes Baldwin Alexander (July 21 1875 - January 1, 1971)[1] was a prominent American Bahá’í and Hand of the Cause.

She was born in a Christian missionary family in Hawaii, and became a Bahá’í in 1900 while visiting Italy. In November 1914 she moved to Japan at the request of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá. There she studied Esperanto also at his request and became a member of the Universal Esperanto Association. The rest of her life she would use her ties to Esperanto to pierce language barriers and talk to others about the Bahá’í Faith.[2]

She was appointed a Hand of the Cause by Shoghi Effendi on 27 March 1957. She returned to Honolulu in 1967 and passed away there in 1971.[3] The Universal House of Justice cabled the following:

“ PROFOUNDLY GRIEVE PASSING ILLUMINED SOUL HAND CAUSE AGNES ALEXANDER LONG-STANDING PILLAR CAUSE FAR EAST FIRST BRING FAITH HAWAIIAN ISLANDS.
