Aberdeen, "The Granite City", is Scotland's third largest centre of population, and is situated on the north-east coast. John Esslemont lived in a nearby village when he published his work, "Bahá'u'llah and the New Era". It is home to a fishing industry and is the mainland port from which much of the offshore oil industry is reached. It has an active Bahá'í community.
