Biography[edit]

Diriǒz was born in Birecik in 1888. In his youth he studied Persian and Arabic and studied literature in the languages. He was introduced to the Bahá’í Faith by his uncle, Shibl Shaykh Muslim, and became a Bahá’í in approximately 1914. In 1921 he married Khayriyyih Doktoroglu having introduced her and her brother, Sami, to the Bahá’í Faith.[1]

The Bahá’í community faced persecution in Turkey and Diriǒz was arrested in Birecik and put on trial for being a member of the religion defending himself successfully in court. He later moved to Adana where he was again arrested and tried and then to Aksaray where he was arrested and tried again. His arrests resulted in increased interest in the Faith in these areas.[1]

In 1957 Diriǒz was invited to live in the National Ḥaẓíratu’l-Quds of Turkey in Istanbul. While residing at the Ḥaẓíratu’l-Quds he began translating Bahá’í texts, including The Dawn-Breakers, into Turkish and he also wrote his own books about the religion. He also taught lessons on the Faith for the Istanbul community and undertook travel teaching trips throughout the country.[1]

In 1963 Diriǒz passed away in Ankara. He was survived by three children who also became active Bahá’ís.[1]
