The Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh
Pictured are the gardens surrounding the Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh

The Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh, located in Bahjí near ‘Akká, is the most holy place for Bahá’ís and represents the Qiblih, or direction of prayer. It contains the remains of Bahá’u’lláh and is near the spot where he died in the Mansion of Bahjí.

The Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh is composed of a central room that has a small garden at its centre, which has trees growing in it and there are layers of carpets around the walls.[1][2] In the right hand corner of the central room there is a small room where Bahá’u’lláh's remains are laid to rest.[3]

History[edit]

As of the late 1880's the building which became the Shrine was the residence of Bahá’u’lláh's son-in-law and daughter, Siyyid ‘Alí Afnán and Furúghiyyih Khánum.[4] It became the Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh after Bahá’u’lláh's Ascension in 1892 when His remains were laid to rest on the premises.

Following ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's Ascension in 1921 Mírzá Muhammad ‘Alí secured control of the Shrine when a group of his supporters forcibly took the keys from the Shrine's caretaker in January 1922.[5] The governor of Acre ordered the keys to be returned to the authorities and a guard was posted at the Shrine.[5] In early 1923 the keys were returned to Shoghi Effendi.[5]
